London Museum will open in Smithfield Market.
London lovers, we have some exciting news. We know that the capital is home to world-class museums and galleries. Now, it is set to welcome the London Museum on 28 November 2026, and it will be located in Smithfield Market.
The London Museum, formerly known as the Museum of London, will coincide with the institution’s 50th anniversary. Following a £437 million transformation of the historic General Market building, the museum is set to become a new cultural destination.

Home to a collection of more than seven million objects, the museum will offer visitors an immersive journey through London’s story. Highlights include Banksy’s famous piranha artwork, the bass guitar smashed by The Clash’s Paul Simonon on the cover of London Calling, part of the Whitechapel fatberg, and the silk vest believed to have been worn by King Charles I at his execution.
Spread across three interconnected spaces, the experience begins with Real Time, a covered former street that will serve as the museum’s main entrance, showcasing the city as it exists today. Visitors will then step into Our Time, where guests can enjoy installations, live events, exhibitions, dining experiences and community activities. Below ground, Past Time will showcase the capital’s fascinating history through permanent galleries filled with extraordinary artefacts.

Exhibitions and events will be welcoming a rotating list of curators. The London Museum’s inaugural programme, London Tastes, will explore the city’s rich food culture, from traditional pie-and-mash shops to beloved culinary destinations such as Covent Garden and Brick Lane.
