The Studio Ghibli film has been turned into a theatre show.

It’s time to get Spirited Away in London. The award-winning Studio Ghibli film is being taken from the screen to the stage. The Japanese stage production will run at the London Coliseum in spring 2028, but the exact dates in March have not yet been confirmed.

Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki is behind the film Spirited Away. The story follows a 10-year-old girl, Chihiro. After her parents are turned into pigs, she wants to enter the spirit world. She takes a job at a magical bathhouse and works to get her parents back.

Spirited Away is a Japanese-language production, which will feature English captions. Plus, puppets will be used to bring the spirited world to life. The production is a collaboration between Toho Theatrical Department and British director John Caird. Caird is an award-winning director who has previously worked on Les Misérables.

Caird said: “I am proud and delighted to present the original Japanese stage production of Spirited Away at the Coliseum Theatre next year. We had a wonderful time creating the show in 2022 and I’m so happy now to be spiriting away a British audience into Hayao Miyazaki’s magical world. A world of gods and frogs, dragons and sorcerers, giant-sized babies and bouncing heads, spider-armed boilermen, no-faced loners and a young girl’s valiant quest for courage, identity and love.”
