Music legends The Kinks are stepping from the stage to the canvas. Brothers Ray and Dave Davies have announced a new exhibition, The Kinks: Brothers, opening at Gibson Garage London. Running from 24 July to 6 September, the exhibition is free to visit, and celebrates creativity and collaboration.
Ray and Dave Davies hail from North London. The pair grew up in Denmark Terrace in Muswell Hill, and it was in the front room that “You Really Got Me” was born. The band went on to score seventeen UK Top 20 singles, including “Dead End Street”, “Lola”, “Sunny Afternoon” and “Waterloo Sunset”.
Long before The Kinks found fame, Ray studied painting at Hornsey College of Art, while Dave has painted for many years. Visual art has always been woven into the brothers’ lives. More than 60 years after The Kinks formed, the pair are coming together once again for a unique exhibition with painter Christian Furr. When Dave saw the finished paintings for the first time, he was so inspired that he picked up a brush and began painting on them himself.
At the heart of The Kinks: Brothers is a passport photobooth photograph of Ray and Dave. In 1968, the image was taken in East Finchley, London. Christian has transformed this treasured image into a vibrant new series of original paintings celebrating the brothers’ enduring bond. Every painting in the exhibition has been signed by Ray and Dave Davies, alongside Christian Furr. Original paintings and limited-edition prints are available to buy from £195.
Dave said: “It was a magical moment when we squeezed into the photobooth all those years ago. Christian Furr has done a wonderful job of transforming the image into these special artworks. We hope people enjoy them as much as we do.”
Ray shared: “It’s always inspiring to see creative people take our music and turn it into something uniquely their own. Christian Furr has done exactly that. It’s wonderful to be creating something new with Dave, and seeing these paintings – alongside the original passport photobooth picture – has brought back so many happy memories.”
Christian added: “I was thinking about Matisse, punk, pop art, luminosity and keeping the colours as bright as possible, because that’s what I see and feel when I listen to The Kinks.”
