The team behind Borough Market favourite Camille is turning its attention to British and Irish culinary traditions.
London’s dining scene is getting another restaurant rooted in history. The team behind acclaimed Borough Market restaurant Camille is preparing to open B. Penhale in Smithfield, with the new venture taking inspiration from the food, culture and culinary traditions of Britain and Ireland.
Opening in October 2026 at 57 West Smithfield, B. Penhale will occupy the former Club Gascon site, directly opposite Smithfield Market. The location feels particularly fitting for a restaurant with meat, heritage and old-school British cooking at its heart.
Chef Elliot Hashtroudi, who leads Camille, has a personal connection to the neighbourhood. The restaurant is named after his grandmother, while his great-grandmother worked as a butcher at Smithfield Market. That family history will help shape a menu exploring British and Irish dishes, with a particular focus on recipes and cooking traditions associated with the Victorian era.
Meat will naturally play a significant role. Diners can look forward to offal, lesser-used cuts and dishes that celebrate nose-to-tail cooking, placing B. Penhale within a part of London already closely associated with this approach. Nearby institution St John has long championed similar principles, helping establish Smithfield as one of the capital’s most important destinations for meat-led British cooking.
The restaurant will seat around 60 diners, while a separate bar will cater to walk-ins. The bar will have its own chalkboard menu, giving the space a different identity from the main dining room and creating a more spontaneous option for visitors to the area.
B. Penhale also arrives with the blessing of Club Gascon’s former chef-owner Pascal Aussignac, who said: “I wish the Camille team and their opening of Penhale’s the same success that Club Gascon had over a generation.”
The arrival of B. Penhale comes at an interesting moment for Smithfield. The area is undergoing a new wave of cultural and culinary activity, with openings including The Horses and the wider redevelopment surrounding the new London Museum. B. Penhale will add another reason to visit, combining personal history with a deep dive into British and Irish food culture.
