If you’re looking for an excuse to spend an afternoon wandering around art galleries, The Courtauld Gallery in London is where you ought to be. The gallery has just announced its exhibition programme for 2027, and it’s a pretty impressive one.
Located inside Somerset House on the Strand, the Courtauld has been one of the quieter cultural gems in London. Its collection spans centuries of European art, but its temporary exhibitions are where things get particularly interesting. For 2027, the gallery is bringing together Paula Rego, JMW Turner, John Constable, Thomas Girtin, John Sell Cotman and Georgia O’Keeffe, alongside a series of smaller displays. The exhibitions will take place from 5 February 2027 and run until 30 January 2028.
The year kicks off with one of the programme’s most compelling exhibitions: Paula Rego: Dog Woman. It explores the artist’s powerful pastel series, with its animal-like figures and themes of desire, rage, power and vulnerability. Alongside it, Turner and the Landscape Generation: Journeys in Watercolour brings together JMW Turner, John Constable, Thomas Girtin and John Sell Cotman, exploring how their travels, friendships and rivalries helped transform British landscape art. The programme then turns to America with Georgia O’Keeffe: Ghost Ranch, bringing together almost two dozen paintings inspired by the artist’s home in New Mexico, most of which have never been shown in the UK.
The three headline exhibitions might be the big draws, but the Courtauld’s smaller displays are worth keeping on your radar too. It will include Flemish drawings in Drawing in the Age of Bruegel, a look at Rubens and his artistic circle, and two newly discovered painted panels attributed to Vanessa Bell. The Courtauld will also showcase an exhibition curated by its MA Curating students, continuing its support for emerging curatorial talent.
With a standout line-up spanning Paula Rego, Turner and the British landscape tradition, and Georgia O’Keeffe, the Courtauld’s 2027 programme is one to have on your London calendar.
