The new venue will be in the former office of a magazine.

The Devonshire team are expanding and opening The Lady, a posh new pub and restaurant. Located in Covent Garden, it will take over the former headquarters of The Lady magazine. Scheduled to open in 2027, here’s what to expect.

The Lady will be located in a six-storey Georgian building. Located at 39-40 Bedford Street, it will span 12,671 square feet. The new venue will retain the magazine’s historic name. The space spans multiple floors with a ground-floor pub and a basement for beer storage.

The building was previously home to The Lady until 2019. The magazine was founded in 1885 by Thomas Gibson Bowles and was Britain’s longest-running women’s magazine. Bowles went on to found Vanity Fair. Originally subtitled A Journal for Gentlewomen, the magazine carved out a unique niche by combining high-society lifestyle content with classified advertisements for domestic staff. This dual focus connected two aspects of Britain’s society, serving both readers from the upper-middle classes and those seeking employment as nannies, governesses, and household staff.

Celebrated chef Ashley Palmer-Watts, famous for his partnership with Heston Blumenthal at the three MICHELIN-starred Fat Duck and for launching Dinner by Heston in Knightsbridge, will be working on The Lady. Originally from Maiden Newton, Dorset, Ashley’s first job in the kitchen was at Le Petit Canard. When he joined Fat Duck, he imagined working there for the rest of his career. He went on to work at The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park Hotel in London. He also worked with Heston Blumenthal and food historians from The British Library and Hampton Court Palace to create the menu.
