Cassette sounds like an unlikely name for a restaurant in London. For the team behind Levan in Peckham, however, they are pressing play on the concept, and it is the name of their new restaurant in Covent Garden. Scheduled to open in autumn, it will celebrate French cooking, cuisine and culture, and here’s what you need to know.
Cassette in London has been created by Mark Gurney and Matt Bushnall. In 2018, the pair launched Levan, which has become a firm favourite in Peckham. Now, they are expanding into zone one, and bringing their expertise to a new audience.
While Levan is known for its broad European-inspired menu, Cassette in London will focus on French cooking and draw inspiration from classic Parisian bistros – in particular, Bistrot des Tournelles. Leading the kitchen is Head Chef Essa Fakhry, founder of Note in Dublin and, most recently, at Planque in London. Dishes at Cassette include coq au vin jaune pie, grilled monkfish au poivre, and a terrine of fromage de tête with tarragon.
Mark said: “I’ve grown up travelling to France every year for family holidays, and over the last ten years both Matt and I have built lasting friendships with so many people in its hospitality scene. Cassette is, in many ways, a homage to that journey and those people.”
If you can’t wait until autumn, make the trip to Peckham and visit Levan. The restaurant prides itself on its warm, welcoming atmosphere and contemporary European plates made with seasonal ingredients.
