Deeney’s brings its famous haggis toasties to the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration.

Soups, salads and statement sandwiches are landing in London. Deeney’s is opening at the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration in Clerkenwell. Opening on 5 June, this is the same team behind the popular Scottish sandwich, Hamish Macbeth.

The full menu for Deeney’s at the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration has not yet been unveiled, but it is expected to include favourites that have given the venue a loyal following. Deeney’s is famous for its Hamish Macbeth sandwich, an epic grilled cheese toastie bursting with caramelised onions, cheese, haggis and rocket. In a fitting nod to Deeney’s most famous sandwich, the centre’s opening exhibition, Performance, will feature Quentin Blake’s illustrations of every character in Macbeth, and this is being shown publicly for the first time.

The sandwiches come with fun names, from the Casanova, which comes with chicken and cheddar, to the Vegan Lady, made with vegan haggis and caramelised onions. The breakfast options range from snacks to fry ups. Dig into croissants, porridge and rolls, or tuck into a Full Fry with eggs, haggis, tattie scone and more. There is also a dedicated children’s menu featuring chips, toasties and more. Drinks will include coffees, teas and smoothies.

Deeney’s can already be found in Leyton and Walthamstow. Founder Carol Deeney explained: “We have always loved Quentin’s work and operating in gallery environments, so we are thrilled to be able to serve great coffee and good food to people visiting these inspiring places.”

The café will sit inside the 19th-century New River Head waterworks in Clerkenwell, and will be located next to Sadler’s Wells. The Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration will be free to visit and will feature public gardens, displays and an illustration library. The collection will include original works from both established and emerging artists, as well as pieces from Quentin Blake’s own archive.
