Hokusai: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji runs from 20 October 2026 to 17 January 2027.

London is hardly short of things to do, but if you fancy swapping the usual pub, restaurant or West End plans for something a little more cultured, there’s something artistic in store for you. Dulwich Picture Gallery is bringing the famous Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji by Katsushika Hokusai to London.
Hokusai: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji from the Iuchi Collection runs from 20 October to 17 January 2027, making it an easy one to add to your London plans. For the first time in the UK, the complete series will be shown together. Happening at the Dulwich Picture Gallery beside Dulwich Park, you can easily turn this exhibition visit into a proper afternoon out.
You’ll almost certainly recognise one of the prints: Under the Wave off Kanagawa, better known as The Great Wave. The blue wave, tiny boats and Mount Fuji in the distance have become one of the most recognisable images in art.
But that’s not all on display. Created around 1830-1833, when Hokusai was already in his seventies, the series shows Mount Fuji from different perspectives. The exhibition also includes three early impressions of The Great Wave, alongside a rare blue impression of Clear Day with a Southern Breeze, better known as Red Fuji.
Born in 1760 in Edo, now Tokyo, Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese artist and printmaker who became one of the most influential figures in Japanese art. He produced thousands of works across his long career. Once Japanese prints began reaching Europe, artists including Claude Monet, Edgar Degas and Vincent van Gogh were fascinated by their compositions, unusual perspectives and striking use of colour — making Katsushika Hokusai’s influence extend beyond borders.
Whether you’re a lifelong fan of Japanese art or simply know The Great Wave from posters, tote bags and pretty much everywhere else, this is a chance to see the image and the artist behind it, in a completely different context.
