Paul Mescal will star in Death of a Salesman and A Whistle in the Dark at the Lyttelton Theatre.
Emilia Clarke, Emma Corrin and Uzo Aduba will all make major appearances across the 2027 programme.
West Side Story will return in a major new Olivier Theatre revival late in 2027.
The National Theatre has unveiled its 2027 programme, packed with major names.
The National Theatre has announced its 2027 season, with major stars, classic plays, new writing and a new production of West Side Story. Taking place on London’s South Bank, the season will run across its three main spaces – the Olivier, Lyttelton and Dorfman – from February until the end of 2027, with productions running throughout the year.
Paul Mescal will star in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, playing Biff Loman. He will appear opposite American actor and playwright Tracy Letts, who makes his UK stage acting debut as Willy Loman. Monica Dolan and Ciaran Hinds are also part of the cast.
Paul Mescal will also star in A Whistle in the Dark, a play by Irish writer Tom Murphy. Caitriona McLaughlin will direct. The two productions will run in repertory in the Lyttelton, with the actors performing in both shows during the same season.
Emilia Clarke will make her National Theatre debut in David Hare’s Plenty. Richard Eyre will direct the production, which marks the play’s 50th anniversary and will run in the Lyttelton. Elsewhere, Emma Corrin will star in Tennessee Williams’ Suddenly Last Summer in the Olivier Theatre. Harriet Walter and Arty Froushan will also appear, with Michael Grandage directing.
Uzo Aduba will make her National Theatre debut in The Adeyemis – A Family Saga in the Dorfman. The new play by Oladipo Agboluaje follows a wealthy Nigerian family during a turbulent period in the country’s history. Lucian Msamati will direct.
The season will also include Major, a new play by James Graham about former Prime Minister John Major. James Graham will reunite with director Jeremy Herrin, with whom he previously worked on This House.
The Olivier Theatre will host a major revival of West Side Story in late 2027. Marianne Elliott and Miranda Cromwell will direct, with Jerome Robbins’ original choreography recreated by Julio Monge.
Other productions include Moira Buffini’s The Great Indaba, Natasha Gordon’s adaptation of Bernardine Evaristo’s Mr Loverman, and Glorious Madness, a new musical built around the songs of Joan Armatrading. Punchdrunk will also bring a new immersive production, Ghostlight, to the National Theatre, although details about the venue and production remain under wraps.
With Paul Mescal, Emilia Clarke, Emma Corrin and Uzo Aduba all joining the season, alongside West Side Story and several major new productions, the National Theatre’s 2027 programme is already shaping up to be one of London’s biggest theatre events of the year.
