King Charles III is behind the vision for Venus Garden in Windsor Castle.
The United Kingdom is home to impressive castles with royal history and heritage. If you are looking for a day trip from London, put Windsor Castle on your radar. Now, there is more reason to visit, thanks to the new Venus Garden, which will be open to the public from 16 July to 13 September.
Formerly known as the East Terrace Garden, the space has been transformed in line with King Charles III’s vision. Inspired by the petal-like pattern created by the orbit of Venus, the redesign blends formal elegance with biodiversity, creating a peaceful retreat within the castle grounds.
Visitors can stroll along winding pathways lined with colourful wildflower meadows, sculpted yew hedging and historic sculptures from the Royal Collection. A striking new treescape, featuring ornamental pear trees, dogwood and crab apple, adds seasonal colour throughout the year. The garden also offers views of Windsor Castle’s east façade – a perspective that is rarely included on a standard visit and is sure to delight photographers.
The redesign also reflects the King’s longstanding interest in sustainability. As well as providing year-round beauty, the garden has been created as a haven for wildlife and pollinators, encouraging biodiversity within the historic grounds.
Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world and has been home to British monarchs for almost 1,000 years. Founded by William the Conqueror shortly after the Norman Conquest in around 1070, it was originally built as a wooden fortress before being rebuilt in stone by Henry II during the 12th century. Over the centuries, it has served as a royal residence, military stronghold and the setting for countless state occasions.
One of the castle’s dramatic moments came in 1992, when a fire swept through more than 100 rooms, including State Apartments. The extensive restoration took five years and returned the castle to its former glory. The castle has held a special place in Queen Elizabeth II’s heart. She chose it as her primary residence during the pandemic, and it was where she was laid to rest in St George’s Chapel alongside Prince Philip.
