Mayfair is home to some of London’s most charming squares and gardens. Now, Grosvenor Square is set to reopen to the public on 20 July. Following a £25 million makeover, it has been transformed into a haven for biodiversity and the public. If you’re planning to visit the new green space, here’s what you need to know.
Grosvenor Square closed to the public in June 2025. Now, just over a year later, the 300-year-old park is ready to welcome visitors back. The square is one of London’s oldest squares, and boasts an incredible history.
The United States Embassy was previously located beside the square. The area was dubbed Little America, and was home to John Adams. Today, the embassy building has been transformed into the luxury hotel, The Chancery Rosewood. Also, the park will pay homage to its American connections with oval-shaped gardens inspired by the original 1720s design, alongside memorials dedicated to Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Eagle Squadrons and the victims of 9/11.
The park will be home to a greener, more sustainable space in the heart of central London. The park will be include 150,000 plants, bulbs and newly planted trees. Plant coverage has increased from less than one per cent to almost 50 per cent. As the new plants and flowers establish themselves, the landscape will become a sight to behold. Plus, woodland and wetland areas have been created to provide habitats for wildlife.
The entrances to Grosvenor Square have been transformed, and there are now 300 places to sit. The space is also family-friendly – lookout for the education centre, which will host London Wildlife Trust programmes for children and adults to learn more about biodiversity. Public facilities will include toilets and water fountains. Plus, a café will serve cakes, coffee, ice cream and sandwiches.
