Knightsbridge in London is home to cars, buses, bikes and plenty of people. Now, that is set to change, as it has been announced that Knightsbridge will be transformed with new pedestrian zones, making it safer and easier for visitors to explore. Launching this autumn, here’s what to expect.
Hans Crescent – the street that runs alongside Harrods and connects directly to Knightsbridge Underground station – is set to be transformed into a pedestrian zone. This means strolling, shopping and stopping for a break will become even easier. Visitors will be able to pop into EL&N or browse the likes of Space NK without having to navigate heavy traffic.
The plans reveal a pedestrian-first space complete with patterned paving in soft shades of grey. Inspired by the surrounding buildings, the design will complement the area’s historic architecture. The revamped space will feature integrated seating, more than 80 square metres of new planting and a new lighting scheme that will showcase the area’s historic façades after dark. There will also be dedicated spaces for temporary art installations, adding an extra splash of creativity to the neighbourhood.
Knightsbridge is not the first area in London to undergo a pedestrian-friendly transformation. Camden High Street and Oxford Street are also set for major car-free developments. The aim is to create a safer, greener and more attractive environment. On Oxford Street, the traffic will be removed between Great Portland Street and Orchard Street. Under the approved plans, the designated section will be closed to private motor vehicles, buses, taxis, cyclists, e-scooters and pedicabs. Buses will be rerouted via Wigmore Street and Henrietta Place, with TfL estimating that journey times will increase by less than a minute.
