Thirty years after the digital pet became a 90s obsession, Tamagotchi returns as a ring.
If you spent the 90s feeding a tiny digital creature between classes, we have some news for you. Your Tamagotchi is back, and this time, you’re wearing it on your finger as a ring.
For anyone unfamiliar with the name, Tamagotchi is the pocket-sized virtual pet that became a global phenomenon after launching in 1996. The idea was simple but surprisingly demanding: feed, clean, play with and care for a tiny digital creature on a small screen — or risk watching your virtual pet get sick or, worse, die. Now, three decades later, Bandai is bringing that familiar experience back in a much smaller form.
To mark Tamagotchi’s 30th anniversary, Bandai has transformed its iconic virtual pet into the Tamagotchi ring, a tiny 28mm-tall device designed to sit on your finger. It retains the familiar egg-shaped design but packs the hardware into a much smaller form, including a 0.56-inch colour LCD that Bandai says is the smallest display it has ever used in a Tamagotchi.
The core experience is still there. Players can feed, nurture and interact with their virtual pets, with 30 characters available to raise from across the franchise’s 30-year history. Familiar faces such as Mametchi and Kuchipatchi appear alongside later favourites including Memetchi, Flowertchi, Lovelitchi and Melodytchi.
And, just like the original, how you care for your pet matters. Different care patterns can influence how your Tamagotchi develops, with certain combinations even capable of unlocking secret characters. Bandai has also added new animations and customisation features, giving the ring more to offer than nostalgia alone.
Pre-orders for the Tamagotchi ring are now open, with prices expected to start from 7,700 yen, which is about USD $52 or AED 200. First deliveries are scheduled for February 2027.
For anyone who remembers the genuine panic of realising they had forgotten to feed their Tamagotchi, the ring is more than a piece of retro tech. It’s a 30th-anniversary revival of one of the 90s’ most beloved gadgets. And if nostalgia proves as powerful as Bandai expects, pre-orders and early stock may not last long.
