Majid Al Futtaim brings back the classic big screen experience with the launch of VOX Cinemas Drive-in at Mall of the Emirates.

Staying true to VOX Cinemas’ belief that movies should be watched on the big screen, a new drive-in experience has opened at Mall Of The Emirates transforming the rooftop of the popular retail and leisure destination into an outdoor movie theatre where screenings are held each evening at 7:30pm.

Adhering to strict physical distancing measures to ensure the health and safety of both staff and customers, visitors can enjoy top movies such as the recently released Bad Boys For Life from the comfort of their cars. Once parked, audiences must tune into a designated radio frequency and the films audio will be streamed directly into the vehicle.

The cost per car is AED 180 and the ticket price includes not only access to the movie but a food and beverage package inclusive of caramel popcorn, salted popcorn, nachos, M&Ms, soft drinks and water. We’d visit for the snacks alone.

While drive-in cinemas were all the rage up until the 1980s, the concept was soon replaced by home viewing technology and modern movie theatre’s that prioritised comfort and the viewing experience. The outbreak of COVID-19 has allowed for the resurgence of the nostalgic drive-in experience, for having people in vehicles enables a successful means of social distancing audiences. For now, this appears to be the only way to experience big screen movies, following the temporary closure of all cinemas in the UAE two months ago.

The capacity for the VOX Cinemas Drive-in is 75 cars, with a maximum of two people per vehicle. In line with government regulations, people over the age of 60 and children between the ages of three and 12 are not permitted to access the mall and the drive-in cinema experience.
