The robotaxi is operating on Al Reem Island and Al Maryah Island.

Abu Dhabi has always known how to put on a show. The capital’s roads have seen Hollywood up close and personal, but this time, it’s stepping into the future. The driverless robotaxi is now officially cruising through Abu Dhabi.

Robotaxis are currently operating on Al Reem Island and Al Maryah Island in Abu Dhabi. All you need to do is hail a robotaxi via the Uber app or the TXAI app, just like a regular ride. The cars can comfortably seat up to five passengers. They’re safe, smart, and designed to navigate Abu Dhabi’s complex roads,  and there’s no one in the driver’s seat. You can sit back and enjoy the ride, knowing your car is being piloted by AI.

Launched initially in December 2024, the autonomous taxi service began with routes across Yas and Saadiyat Islands, eventually connecting to Zayed International Airport. Since then, the fleet has tripled in size and is set to expand further. The plans is to reach areas such as Khalifa City, Masdar City, and central Abu Dhabi. With this latest expansion, robotaxi rides now cover about half of the capital’s main areas, making it even easier to get around.

Beyond the novelty factor, this development aligns with Abu Dhabi’s smart transport vision. The capital aims for 25 per cent of all trips to rely on smart mobility by 2040. This also follows on from the news of the robotaxis expansion in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

So, next time you’re booking a ride in Abu Dhabi, don’t be surprised if there’s no driver. These driverless taxis are just the beginning, with more innovations expected to roll out soon.
