The Malay Heritage Centre has reopened after a three-year renovation.
After more than three years, the Malay Heritage Centre has officially reopened in Singapore. Located in Kampong Glam, the newly revamped cultural landmark returns with updated galleries, an opening festival, and a fresh perspective on Malay identity in the region.
Set within the former royal palace of Istana Kampong Gelam, the centre has long been a key spot for exploring Malay culture in Singapore. Following its renovation, it now offers a more modern and inclusive experience that reflects how Malay identity continues to evolve.
A major highlight of the reopening is the introduction of six redesigned permanent galleries centred on the theme Dari Rantau Ke Rumah, which means “From the Region to Home”. They look beyond Singapore to the wider Malay Archipelago, and explore how migration, trade, and cultural exchange have shaped Malay communities over time.
Visitors can explore 279 artefacts, alongside interactive features such as Jawi name-printing and immersive storytelling elements. The exhibitions also highlight everyday life, oral traditions, and cultural practices, offering a more holistic view of Malay heritage in Singapore.
The revamp also focuses on diversity. Stories from sub-ethnic groups like Javanese, Bugis, Minangkabau, and Orang Pulau communities are featured, alongside lesser-known figures, including women and cultural contributors.
To celebrate the reopening, the centre is launching Pesta Pecah Panggung – Transcending Boundaries, a festival running until 3 May 2026. It will feature more than 50 programs, including live performances, a cultural parade, workshops, traditional craft demonstrations, and interactive experiences.
Admission is free for all visitors until 28 June 2026 After that, entry remains free for Singapore citizens and permanent residents, while tourists will need to pay.
