The stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s flamboyant film is heading to Marina Bay Sands for its Southeast Asia premiere.

Southeast Asia’s theatre calendar is about to get a little more decadent. Moulin Rouge! The Musical will premiere in Singapore at Sands Theatre, with a limited run from 16 February to 4 April 2027. Presented by Base Entertainment Asia as part of the production’s first world tour, the show promises the kind of lavish escapism that has made Moulin Rouge one of the most recognisable titles in modern musical theatre.

Part of the appeal lies in the legacy of the source material. Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film turned a feverish Paris love story into a pop culture landmark, with Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor leading a production that fused cabaret, melodrama and pop music into something bold, romantic and instantly memorable. The film went on to receive eight Oscar nominations and won for Art Direction and Costume Design, cementing its status as more than just a stylish box office hit.

The stage version has built a formidable legacy of its own. Directed by Alex Timbers, with music supervision and arrangements by Justin Levine, and choreography by Sonya Tayeh, the production has become one of Broadway’s biggest modern crowd-pleasers. It won 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and expanded the film’s jukebox spirit into a score spanning more than 160 years of music, incorporating more than 70 songs from the original film and featuring artists such as Adele, Katy Perry, Sia, Rihanna and Beyoncé.

For audiences watching Moulin Rouge in Singapore, that means an evening built on excess in the best possible sense: velvet-dripped romance, high-impact choreography, swooning emotion and a soundtrack designed to keep theatre-goers hooked. At its heart is the story of Christian, an American writer, and Satine, the star of the Moulin Rouge nightclub, whose romance unfolds amid financial pressure, jealousy and the desperate need to save the club itself. It is grand, tragic, and unapologetically theatrical, which is exactly why it continues to resonate.
