Studio Ghibli arrives in Singapore with a world-first exhibition modelled on the animated settings of its beloved films.
Devotees of Studio Ghibli productions can now do a lot more than rewatch their favourite films for the umpteenth time to soothe their need for nostalgia. Opening on 18 December 2026 at Gardens by the Bay’s West Lawn, The Story of Studio Ghibli promises 12 immersive experiences created exclusively for Singapore and never seen anywhere else, Japan included.
The exhibition brings 12 worlds from the Japanese animation house’s beloved filmography to life, including The Boy and the Heron, My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away. It also shines a little light on some of Studio Ghibli’s cult favourites, including Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind from 1984, with visitors getting the chance to come face to face with the film’s rather imposing Ohm creature.
There is plenty here to keep longtime Ghibli obsessives occupied, too. Wander through the lantern-lit streets of Spirited Away, step inside the Guchokipanya bakery from Kiki’s Delivery Service, or stand in the rain alongside Totoro as you wait for the Catbus. Essentially, this is the closest most of us will get to stepping straight into a Ghibli film without having to be animated.
And while the exhibition should make for a particularly strong addition to your camera roll, The Story of Studio Ghibli is aiming for more than just Instagram fodder. Educational programmes exploring some of Studio Ghibli’s recurring themes, including creativity, resilience and environmental awareness, will also be introduced closer to the exhibition’s opening.
As Sean Lim, CEO of M Experience, puts it: “The Story of Studio Ghibli is not simply an exhibition to be viewed. It is an experience to be felt.” Through 12 recreated scenes inspired by the studio’s iconic films, visitors will be invited to step into the stories themselves and reconnect with the emotions, values and imagination that have made Studio Ghibli a global cultural phenomenon.
