WhatsApp now lets you edit messages after they’ve been sent

The feature will be rolled out to users in the coming weeks.

The moment we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived. Drumroll, please… WhatsApp is introducing the long-awaited feature that allows you to edit messages.

In a recent Facebook post, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed the news. Now, within a 15-minute window, you have the power to modify any sent message. Yes, you heard that right – editing is now a reality.

And it couldn’t be easier. Just press and hold on the message you want to adjust and the edit option appears, giving you the freedom to make alterations. To make sure everyone knows you’ve worked your editing magic, the edited messages will proudly wear an “edited” label right next to the time stamp.

But here’s the fun part. WhatsApp won’t keep a history of your corrections and your fellow chatmates won’t be able to peek into the previous versions.

This new feature is a welcome addition for WhatsApp users who previously had to resort to either deleting a message entirely or sending a separate correction message. Last year, the chat app extended the time limit for message deletion from 48 to 60 hours.

Meta has confirmed that the message editing feature is officially making its grand entrance and rolling out to users as we speak. It will be available to everyone in the coming weeks. And with WhatsApp boasting over two billion users worldwide, this update is expected to have a significant impact on how people communicate through the platform.

While WhatsApp has been a dominant force in the messaging app market, competitors like Telegram and Signal have long offered message editing capabilities. Even Twitter, a social media platform, introduced an edit button for its paid users in the past year. Although WhatsApp’s 15-minute editing window may not be as generous as Telegram’s 48-hour timeframe, it is certainly a step in the right direction.
