A monotheistic exhibition has been unveiled at Louvre Abu Dhabi

Letters of Light will touch upon the three major religions of the world.

History enthusiasts, this one’s for you. Get ready to embark on a fascinating journey of monotheistic religions as Louvre Abu Dhabi opens its doors to the much-anticipated exhibition, Letters of Light. In collaboration with Bibliotheque Nationale de France and France Museums, this exhibition promises to be a captivating exploration of the historical, cultural, and spiritual significance of the holy texts at the core of three of the world’s major religions.

Curated by experts Laurent Hericher and Dr. Souraya Noujaim, Letters of Light brings together over 240 artworks, manuscripts, photographs, and artefacts that shed light on the Quran, Bible, and Torah. These precious items, sourced from prestigious institutions offer you a unique opportunity to delve into the origins, transmission, and artistic interpretations of these ancient texts.

The exhibition showcases a wide array of works such as exquisite texts like the Souvigny Bible, captivating paintings like Giovanni Bellini’s “Virgin and Child,” and intriguing artefacts like the “Key to the Kaaba.” These treasures serve as a testament to the shared origins of these religions, transcending personal beliefs and enriching understanding of the shared human heritage.

Moreover, Letters of Light aims to emphasise the universality of Quranic, biblical, and evangelical messages, their ethical dimensions, and their crucial roles in shaping intellectual and artistic history. It bridges cultures, eras, and places, inviting you to indulge in a moment of meditation and aesthetic emotion.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is a commissioned artwork by Saudi visual artist Muhannad Shono, titled “The Unseen,” which uses threads to metaphorically weave together the rich tapestry of the three monotheistic faiths. Other masterpieces include the “Blue Quran folio,” one of the most sumptuous ancient copies of the Quran and the “Palimpsest leaf of a Quran (Hijazi style),” which dates back to the 10th century.

As the exhibition kicks off, it invites us to explore the shared stories of humanity woven through the sacred texts of monotheism. So don’t miss the opportunity and get your tickets now because Letters of Light only runs until 14 January 2024.
