The exhibition explores one of the Islamic world’s most famous dynasties.
Louvre Abu Dhabi has opened a new exhibition, Mamluks: Legacy of an Empire. Running from 17 September to 25 January, the display celebrates the grandeur and artistry of one of the Islamic world’s most famous dynasties. The show explores the Mamluk Sultanate’s rule, which lasted over 250 years.
The exhibition features more than 270 artworks, gathered from 34 museums and cultural institutions across 13 countries. On display are ceramics, coins, glassware, metalwork, manuscripts and textiles. Plus, paintings that bring to life a society brimming with creativity and craftsmanship.
The exhibition has been curated by Dr Souraya Noujaim, Dr Carine Juvin and Fakhera Alkindi. The themes explore the political and military power of the Mamluks, as well as their contributions to knowledge, faith, diplomacy, and the arts. The curators have undertaken new research, shedding light on the often-overlooked roles of women and religious minorities during this period.

Manuel Rabaté, Director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, said: “We are proud to present Mamluks: Legacy of an Empire, which celebrates the cultural and artistic achievements of one of the Islamic world’s most influential dynasties. This exhibition delves into the interactions of the Mamluk Sultanate with Asia, Africa and Europe, revealing how interconnected the world was at that time, and how remarkably aligned in spirit it was with the cosmopolitan nature of contemporary Abu Dhabi. We are grateful for our partners, lenders and sponsors, whose collaboration helped us bring history to life and deepen cultural connections across borders.”
