A three-day weekend is on the way.
Looking forward to the next UAE public holiday? The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) has announced that Friday, 28 August 2026, will be a public holiday, marking Prophet Muhammad’s birthday (PBUH). Although a Friday has been announced for the public holiday, rather than the expected Monday, UAE residents will still receive a long weekend, ahead of schools reopening following the long summer break.
The UAE public holiday falls on a Friday, which means that employees in both the public and private sectors will receive paid leave and a three-day weekend. The news was announced on Instagram with the caption: “The Prophet’s Birthday holiday for the Federal Government and private sector will be observed on Friday, 28 August 2026.”
The Prophet’s birthday falls on 12 Rabi’ Al-Awwal 1444, which is the third month in the Islamic calendar. This date holds particular significance for many Muslims around the world, especially within certain sects that observe it as a time to honour the life and teachings of the Prophet (PBUH). In recognition of its religious importance, some countries designate it as a public holiday.
Traditionally, the day is marked with gatherings in mosques and homes, where believers recite passages from the Qur’an. Homes and streets are often decorated with lights, creating a spiritual atmosphere. Communities may also host sermons and lectures that reiterate the Prophet (PBUH)’s message of compassion and kindness.
When is the next public holiday?
Following Prophet Muhammad’s birthday (PBUH), the next UAE public holiday is Commemoration Day. Previously known as Martyrs’ Day, it commemorates the sacrifices of Emiratis who have given their lives in service to the country, whether in civil, military, or humanitarian roles. The public holiday falls on Wednesday, 2 December 2026, and is followed by Eid Al Etihad on Thursday, 3 December 2026, meaning two days off mid-week.
