Journey into the future at this upcoming exhibition

The works of four digital artists will be showcased at the Theatre of Digital Art next month.

Lately, it seems that everyone is talking about the ‘metaverse‘ – without knowing exactly what that means. And while the term remains both vague and complex, it is indicative of a major shift in how we interact with technology. Case in point: the upcoming Digital Extravaganza exhibition at the Theatre of Digital Art (ToDA) in Souk Madinat Jumeirah next month.

Taking place from 13 May to 31 August and promising to bring a new dimension to Dubai’s cultural scene, the exhibition is the result of ToDA calling on artists across the globe to showcase their talents through projects that traverse alternate realities and dimensions. Visitors are invited to imagine themselves as travellers on a multisensory narrative journey, exploring unknown lands on Planet Earth and other galaxies before finally immersing in the Metaverse gallery, created especially for the exhibition by phygital platform Arhead. By switching between Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, MetaReality, AI, and video, participants will witness different perspectives of visual art.

Each visitor is the protagonist in their story. You can ride along on an apocalypse-horse in Jonathan Monaghan’s “Out of the Abyss”, learn about the solarpunk movement from “Eyra” by Synticate, become a genetic engineer in Luna Ikuta’s “Afterlife”, or reflect upon conspiracies in a futuristic world in “Refuge/Refuse” created by Arnaud Laffond. Additionally, ToDA will also host its first digital model and visualisation of artificial intelligence SYNTI. This 3D holographic figure connected to a language bot will discuss the exhibition and digital art with visitors.

The innovative works of four renowned digital artists will be displayed alongside the contemporary art of ten winners shortlisted from almost hundreds of applications in response to ToDA’s international open call. As for those who desire to deep dive into the artworks? They will be minted not only as NFTs, but also transformed into 3D assets ready for AR and ToDA’s Metaverse space. Through the eyes of the best established and emerging artists from across the world under a single roof, ToDA opens the door to an unreal virtual space IRL.
