Filmmakers can submit for Best International Feature Film.

In a major step towards integrating Saudi Arabia’s growing film industry into the global cinema landscape, Saudi storytellers now have an open submission window for the Oscars. Specifically, the International Feature Film category.

This initiative forms part of the Kingdom’s continued support for homegrown talent, aiming to elevate Saudi stories to an international platform. The Film Commission has invited eligible filmmakers across Saudi Arabia to submit their feature-length films for consideration, and has aligned its rules and eligibility criteria with those of the Academy. The deadline for submissions is 15 September 2025.

Oscars

Since lifting its ban on public cinemas in 2018, Saudi Arabia has rapidly developed its film sector, producing a growing number of independent and commercial films. Wadjda, a 2012 Saudi Arabian film, was Saudi Arabia’s first ever submission for the Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The film follows a young girl, and the freedom she finds on her bike.

To qualify, filmmakers should take note of the following requirements. The film must be predominantly in a non-English language. It must be a feature-length narrative with a running time of over 40 minutes. The first theatrical release must take place between Tuesday, 1 October 2024 and Tuesday, 30 September 2025. The film must not have been released on streaming platforms, television, DVD, or similar formats prior to its theatrical release. And, creative control must lie with Saudi citizens or residents.

Filmmakers are also required to submit a synopsis, a list of cast and crew, and production details. The Saudi Film Commission will appoint a selection committee comprising local industry experts to evaluate the submissions. One film will be selected to represent the Kingdom at the Oscars.
