Lewis Hamilton wore an all-chrome helmet to the Japanese GP

The futuristic helmet is a collaboration between Lewis Hamilton and Hajime Sorayama.

The 2023 Formula 1 season is well underway, with races scheduled to take place in Doha (8 October), São Paulo (5 November) and Las Vegas (19 November) before the thrilling finale in Abu Dhabi on 26 November.

Both on and off the track, 38-year-old British driver Lewis Hamilton has become a public figure who never fails to surprise. From a controversial motorcycle selfie in 2016 to taking the knee on the starting grid in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, there is as much interest in the personal aswell as the professional life of this team Mercedes driver.

Ahead of this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton took to Instagram to unveil a sleek custom-built helmet for the race.

“LIMITLESS ⚙️ Worked with @hajimesorayamaofficial on this helmet and so proud of how it came to life !! I’ve been a fan of him and his work for a long time and since the dawn of launching @plus44world, collaborating with him has been a personal goal of mine. Can’t wait for you all to see it on the track,” Lewis wrote in the caption.

The helmet is a collaboration with Japanese illustrator Hajime Sorayama, known for his chrome-plated humanoid robots. The futuristic design showcases a sleek, silver sheen that harmoniously enhances the stylish grey of the Mercedes single-seater, culminating in a visually striking fusion of colours in a one-of-a-kind helmet crafted for Hamilton.

With its illuminated visor, the helmet also displays Hamilton’s customary sponsors and a striking gold stripe for contrast. Additionally, an accompanying +44 apparel collection appears to include an array of jackets, T-shirts, trousers, and accessories adorned with Sorayama’s robot artwork alongside Hamilton’s distinctive “+44” brand logo.

This partnership underscores Lewis Hamilton’s enthusiasm for racing and art. The British Formula 1 luminary revealed the design in the mesmerising ambience of teamLAB Planets in Tokyo.

Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton’s former rival, also unveiled a unique helmet adorned with a Samurai design ahead of the race.

While the helmet definitely gives us Daft Punk vibes, we cannot wait to see if another design will materialise ahead of the season closer at Yas Marina Circuit, here in the UAE this November.
