City Rides: MG5

The MG5 is an all-new compact sedan packed with advanced technology and cutting-edge features.

Even though MG Motors was established as far back as 1920, the brand has been slow in gaining the level of popularity enjoyed by other well-known car manufacturers. However, we are now witnessing, through the ever-increasing surge in MG motor vehicle sales, that this is swiftly changing. Best known for producing two-seater sports cars, MG Motors, now under Chinese ownership, went on to develop a variety of saloon models and eventually, coupés. In 2016, we at FACT Magazine experienced the brand’s first sports utility vehicle, namely the MG GS. We immediately recognised the potential this manufacturer has to develop competitive motor vehicles for this market segment. This month we were offered the opportunity to test drive the all-new MG5, which we readily accepted.

As the MG5 came into view for the first time, we were struck by the bold yet uncomplicated design of the exterior. The new MG5 has been completely re-designed from the ground-up, with a brand-new personality to appeal to MG’s young audience in the region. With its sharp, aggressive lines, the MG5 cuts an imposing silhouette, accentuated by ‘lightening blade’ LED daytime running headlights and a chrome Wingspan grille at the front and LED lights at the rear.

Once inside the cabin, it was plain to see why MG is fast gaining a reputation for delivering premium finishes. High-end materials ensure the interior of the MG5 has a first-class feel to it. It’s best in class 2680mm wheelbase contributes to the compact dimensions that emphasise the sedan’s dynamic styling. The large touchscreen sits at the centre of the MG5’s ‘yacht-style’ dashboard, which features leather upholstery and soft-touch trim to provide a truly premium feel inside the cabin. At the same time, the rhythmic, smooth lines create a comfortable and pleasant atmosphere.

Space and practicality are areas of design where the MG5 impresses. With a focus on well-being, whilst maintaining comfort and style, both front seats are electrically adjustable – the driver’s seat benefits from six-way adjustment with manual lumbar support. In contrast, the passenger seat features a four-way power adjustment. The rear seats offer unrivalled levels of comfort and space thanks to their ergonomic design.

For optimum interior comfort, the MG5’s air conditioning system has been extensively tested to master the challenging weather conditions in the Gulf region. An electric sunroof also floods the cabin with natural light.

MG models are currently renowned for offering some of the finest and most user-friendly technology available for motor vehicles. Created to cater for modern, tech-savvy millennials, the MG5 is equipped with the latest in-car technology equipment. The on-board infotainment system includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with top-of-the-range models boasting a 10.1-inch touchscreen. Three conveniently located USB ports allow for added connectivity and mobile device charging, while a 3.5-inch virtual instrument panel displays essential driver information that can be controlled via a multi-function steering wheel.

Hands-free Bluetooth and cruise control are standard on all models, while keyless entry and push start ignition are available on top-of-the-range models for a quick and easy start to any journey. The new trim is also available with a smart, 360-degree surround-view camera and parking sensors. The MG5’s boot has been designed with a low floor and wide aperture for hassle-free loading and is exceptionally roomy.

The MG5 comes with a dynamic yet efficient 1.5L petrol engine that delivers maximum power of 110hp at 6,000 rpm and up to 150 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm, positioning it ahead of its key competitors. The MG5 engine management system developed by BOSCH features a Dual Cooling Cycle that increases overall engine efficiency and longevity. Its efficient CVT gearbox delivers smooth gear shifts while continually adapting to the car’s performance to provide a fuel consumption figure of just 5.5L/100 km, subject to driving conditions.

Bringing the MG5’s personality to life, the compact sedan uses MG’s XDS system for enhanced cornering, a choice of three steering modes and ESP traction control across all trim levels.

Despite its compact sedan dimensions, the MG5 is big on safety and has received a 5 Star CNCAP Safety Rating. The high-tensile steel cage-style body and the use of advanced laser brazing technology enhance overall body strength and stiffness. There are up to six airbags, depending on trim, including two curtain airbags and standard ISOFIX fittings with seat belt reminder for child safety.

The availability of an auto-hold function, electric parking brake, ABS, EBD and corner brake control reinforces that safety is a priority in the new MG5. The braking system is effective and along with excellent traction control, ensures you always feel in charge of the driving experience, even around tricky bends. In total, there are 13 active safety features. Security has not been overlooked, and remote central locking is standard across the range.

True to its tagline’ too good to be true’, the MG5 is a ‘no compromise’ alternative to the more traditional models in the market, offering new car buyers unrivalled equipment levels and the very best combination of cutting-edge technology, space and style wrapped up in a modern compact sedan package.

MG Motors exciting new challenger in the compact sedan sector, the all-new MG5, is now available across the Middle East.
