How does the reborn MG RX5 fare on the UAE’s highest peak?

The MG RX5 2023 model is MG’s latest offering and it’s being brought to the UAE by Inter Emirates Motors. The reborn model symbolised by a Phoenix was launched in style at Caesars Palace Dubai. The event included a captivating laser show performance, complemented by lavish mocktails and canapés, and we were lucky enough to take the top model home for a test drive. With the long weekend ahead, we took the MG RX5 for a test drive to Jebel Jais to see how it performed all the way to the top of the UAE’s highest peak.

The drive was an absolute pleasure, thanks to the car’s advanced tech, safety features, and powerful performance. The MG RX5 is an excellent choice for both city driving and long road trips, and we were thoroughly impressed with its comfort, convenience, and style.

At first glance, the MG RX5 is a stunning vehicle. Its 3D geometric grill and slender waistline draw the eye and give the car a strong and powerful posture on the road. The LED headlights and daytime running lights add to the sleek design, and the overall effect is one of speed and agility, which turned a few heads on our way to Ras Al Khaimah.

The exterior of the MG RX5 is not the only thing that has been given an uplift. The interior is padded with soft leather and has an ergonomic design accentuated by the panoramic sunroof that feels comfortable and welcoming. There are plenty of storage spaces, including a discreet one beneath the stylish central armrest, which is level with the door armrests, making it feel like a comfy sofa.

The performance of the MG RX5 is impressive, with a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 171hp and 275Nm of torque. This allows the car to hit a top speed of 190kmph, which we didn’t get a chance to reach but got from 0-100kmph in just 9.4 seconds. The RX5 comes with a seven-speed Dual Clutch Transmission and standard cruise control for a smooth and comfortable ride, which we loved.

The MG RX5 is also packed with advanced technology. The dashboard has been redesigned, and the car comes with a 14.1″ touchscreen display and a 12.3″ fully digital navigation cluster. There are also plenty of convenience features, including push-button ignition, keyless entry, a rearview camera, and a 360-degree park view camera on the full option model. The car also has Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and GPS navigation with speed warnings.

Safety is a top priority in the MG RX5. The car has front and side airbags as standard, and the top trim model has six airbags, including two curtain airbags. The suspension has been upgraded to optimise maximum bracket stiffness and reduce excess shaking, vibration, shocks, and rattles, which came in handy on the sharp turns of Jebel Jais. The body structure is made of 65% high-strength steel and is designed to minimise the impact of a collision by absorbing the energy. Luckily we didn’t have the chance to challenge that. We did, however, take advantage of the RX5’s full 360-degree parking camera and surrounding parking sensors to fit into the tight spots of an overly crowded parking lot. Lastly, it also has an Electronic Stability Program with eight safety functions.
