Sharjah cancels New Year’s Eve fireworks in solidarity with Gaza

Sharjah Police have urged people to comply.

Since 7 October, many residents of Gaza have been displaced and more than 20,000 lives have been lost. The world has been calling out the atrocities, and major events across the globe are being cancelled. 

Now, the emirate of Sharjah has decided to forgo its New Year’s Eve fireworks displays, choosing instead to stand in solidarity with the people of Gaza. The decision was announced by the General Command of Sharjah Police on social media, reflecting a sincere expression of empathy and cooperation with those affected by the ongoing conflict in Gaza. 

Typically, New Year’s Eve in Sharjah is marked by spectacular fireworks shows that light up the night sky. However, this year, the Al Majaz Waterfront, a popular venue for such celebrations, confirmed the cancellation of its annual display. Sharjah Police not only confirmed the ban on fireworks celebrations but also urged the public and organisations to wholeheartedly comply with this directive. Legal consequences await those who flout the ruling, emphasising the seriousness with which Sharjah authorities view this gesture of solidarity.

The impact of the conflict extends beyond just New Year’s Eve fireworks displays. Several live events and concerts in the UAE have been cancelled or postponed including some big performances at Dubai’s Coca-Cola Arena featuring Khalid and Macklemore and others at Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena.

Sharjah’s choice to forgo New Year’s Eve fireworks serves as a beacon of hope and a testament to the unwavering commitment to stand with those in times of adversity. It is a reminder that even in the midst of celebration, it is crucial to acknowledge and respond to the pressing needs of our global community.
