The Kingdom’s first Saudi-French cultural hub has opened its doors in AlUla.

AlUla is one of Saudi Arabia’s most exciting destinations, and with cooler weather drawing visitors back to the canyons and palm groves, a new landmark has entered the arts scene. Villa Hegra has opened as the first Saudi French cultural institution in the Kingdom, signalling a partnership between the two nations and a fresh chapter for arts and culture in the ancient oasis town.

Designed by French architects Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal, the building takes its cues from AlUla’s natural setting. Local materials and native planting help the structure sit softly within the landscape while still presenting a striking architectural statement. The result is a space that reflects the heritage of its surroundings while looking confidently to the future.

Inside, Villa Hegra functions as a working creative campus. Artist studios support production and experimentation, while an exhibition hall, educational spaces, and AlUla’s first indoor cinema and performing arts studio anchor a year-round programme. The inaugural cultural season, led by Saudi curator Basmah Felemban and French curator Gael Charbau, brings artist residencies, youth workshops, exhibitions, and collaborations with leading French institutions, including the Philharmonie de Paris.

Villa Hegra will also join the international “Villas” network, placing AlUla alongside iconic cultural addresses such as Villa Medici in Rome and Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto. This connection situates the new institution within a respected global ecosystem, creating pathways for exchange and long-term collaboration.

Beyond its programming, Villa Hegra embodies the ambitions of Vision 2030 by elevating AlUla from a celebrated archaeological site to a living museum for contemporary culture.
