Rooftop dining, Levantine sharing plates and local flavours meet at AlUla’s newest restaurant.

The allure of AlUla has a way of making dinner feel like part of a bigger adventure. After a day exploring sandstone monuments and ancient trade routes, there is now another table to book. Nasim Hegra at The Chedi Hegra serves contemporary Levantine cuisine within Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The restaurant’s name means “gentle breeze”, and the concept offers several ways to settle into its extraordinary surroundings. Guests can dine at Nasim Restaurant & Lounge, head upstairs for rooftop dining at Skyview, or gather over Levantine tapas in the lounge. Private dining is also available for those planning a more intimate occasion.

The à la carte menu unfolds across seven chapters, pairing familiar Levantine dishes with premium ingredients. Bluefin Nayeh, Lobster Kibbeh and Baby Lamb Arayes sit alongside Char-Grilled Octopus and Spiced Toothfish Sayadieh. For a centrepiece made for sharing, there is a 1.2kg Wagyu Tomahawk.

Groups can also choose between the Taste of Nasim and Taste of Hegra menus, each featuring four courses served to share. Dessert keeps a connection to the destination through Barni Date Warm Cake, made with dates grown in AlUla, while Chocolate Stones provide another sweet finish.

An entirely alcohol-free programme includes Sip of Hegra signature mocktails and Modern Heritage 0.0% interpretations of classic drinks. Specialty coffees also feature, alongside traditional Saudi coffee served from a dallah.

Beyond the table, Hegra was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2008. The archaeological site preserves 111 monumental tombs, with elaborate façades carved directly into sandstone. Built by the Nabataeans, whose civilisation also shaped Petra in Jordan, Hegra was part of a trading network connecting the Arabian Peninsula with the Mediterranean world and Asia. Its inscriptions, wells and monuments reveal a landscape shaped by centuries of cultural exchange.

The Chedi Hegra offers an unusually close connection to that history. The only hotel within Hegra itself, the 35-key property incorporates a historic railway station and restored buildings. Its setting adds another chapter to the destination’s story, recalling the railway that connected Damascus and Madinah during the early 20th century.

For overnight guests, stone walls, arched doorways and terraces facing the desert give the accommodation a strong sense of place. A restored steam engine and a striking canopy following the old railway tracks keep the property’s past in view, while a spa and swimming pool offer opportunities to unwind between excursions. With Nasim Hegra now open, dinner becomes another reason to linger.
