Cirque du Soleil to perform at Riyadh Season 2022’s opening ceremony

Here’s what to expect from the opening performance.

Riyadh Season 2022 is back and is kicking off in style with a grand opening ceremony. The ceremony takes place on 21 October in the Saudi capital, and Cirque du Soleil is launching the festival with a dazzling performance.

Riyadh Season is in its third edition and this year’s opening ceremony includes a performance from the world-famous circus group, Cirque du Soleil. We are expecting the capital to be filled with fun, as guests can marvel at dazzling costumes, elaborate sets and death-defying stunts.

We are expecting Cirque du Soleil’s performance to draw from its current show OVO. The show is running at Riyadh’s Princess Nourah Bint Abdul Rahman University until 3 December, and tells the story of insects – Cirque-style – as it brings to life ants, spiders and crickets through music and dance.

Cirque du Soleil in Riyadh

This is not the first time that Cirque du Soleil has come to Saudi Arabia. After the group signed a deal with Saudi’s Ministry of Culture, it has performed many times in the kingdom. Previous shows include Fuzion at Jeddah Season and Messi 10 at Riyadh Season, which was a tribute to the Argentinian footballer Lionel Messi.

If Riyadh Season’s previous ceremonies are anything to go by, we are expecting this year’s ceremony to be epic in scale with a glittering parade, A-list singers and epic fireworks. In 2021, the opening ceremony welcomed international rapper Pitbull and 75,000 guests attended.

Riyadh Season 2022 is part of Saudi Seasons, which includes Sharqiyah Season in March and Jeddah Season in June. Riyadh Season launched in 2019 and is the biggest festival of its kind on the Middle East. This year’s Riyadh Season 2022 runs from 21 October to early 2023, and brings 15 dedicated zones covering restaurants, stalls, rides and more to the city.
