Enjoy screenings, workshops and talks at the new cinema.
Lights, camera, Jeddah. The city has welcomed a new art house cinema, Cinema Al Balad. The venue screens Saudi Arabian, international and classic films. If you want to enjoy the magic of the movies, here’s how to join the fun.
Cinema Al Balad draws inspiration from Saudi Arabia’s first open-air cinema, Al-Jumjum Cinema. At the time, films were screened outdoors in the historic district of Jeddah, and tickets were SAR 10. Special guests included Egyptian film stars: Adel Imam, Hussein Fahmy, Farid Shawqi and Mahmoud Yassin.
Now, Cinema Al Balad aims to bring that experience back to life. The screenings will include short films, feature films and documentaries. The content will come from emerging as well as established filmmakers. As part of its mission, it aims to highlight local talent, partner with regional film festivals, and host Arab as well as international premieres.
It will not just be about film screenings, but special events. Look out for talks and workshops with actors, cinematographers, composers, directors, editors, producers and screenwriters. Upcoming screenings include Hobal and Thank You for Banking With Us.
The cinema experience has changed rapidly in Saudi Arabia. In 2018, cinemas re-opened after a 35-year ban. The Marvel movie, Black Panther, was the first film to be shown. Today, there are a range of cinemas across the Kingdom from the art house to multiplexes. Plus, every year the Red Sea International Film Festival takes place in Jeddah, and welcomes movie makers from around the world.
