13 Saudi short films are heading to Netflix

Prepare to be glued to your screen this weekend.

Saudi Arabia is establishing a strong presence in the arena of world cinema, and streaming giant Netflix is about to shine a spotlight on the Kingdom’s thriving film scene with the release of New Saudi Voices 2.

The New Saudi Voices collection showcases the incredible talents of Saudi filmmakers. This second volume comprises 13 short films spanning a wide range of genres, including feel-good movies, drama, fantasy, romance, and more. Each film offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Saudi culture and storytelling.

The films in this year’s collection were carefully selected from the prestigious Red Sea International Film Festival. Two of them, When Red Blooms by Tala Alharbi and The Child in His Closet by Khaled Zeidan, even clinched the top spots in the festival’s 48-hour Filmmaking Challenge last year. VHS Tape Replaced by Maha Saati and Yallah, Yallah Beenah by Mohammed Hammad also received support from the festival’s Red Sea Fund.

Other New Saudi Voices films include the award-winning writer Faisal Buhaishi’s Last Chance to Fall in Love, which tugs at the heartstrings with the touching story of an old man reuniting with his first love after 50 years. Old Phone Number by Ali Saeed and Zabarjad by Hussain Almutliq explore the themes of personal growth and nostalgia.

So mark your calendars for Friday, 6 October, because that’s when New Saudi Voices 2 will hit Netflix. Don’t miss out on these compelling stories that have the power to move hearts and bridge cultures.
