The show will take place at the King Fahd Cultural Centre next month.

Saudi Arabia’s cultural calendar shows no signs of slowing. From international sporting fixtures to music festivals, the Saudi capital has become a stage for global talent. Next on the bill is the Riyadh debut of Carmen, one of the world’s most beloved operas.

First performed in 1875, Carmen is a four-act opera by French composer Georges Bizet that has since become one of the most frequently staged works in the repertoire. The story follows Carmen, a free-spirited factory worker whose allure upends the life of soldier Don José. What begins as infatuation intensifies into a tale of passion, jealousy and betrayal with drama that still resonates 150 years on. Expect the opera’s famous melodies to ring out, from the sultry “Habanera” to the rousing “Toreador Song,” alongside sweeping ensemble scenes and atmospheric orchestration.

Carmen Riyadh

Staged from 4 to 6 September 2025 at the King Fahd Cultural Centre, this limited three-night run brings Bizet’s masterpiece to life with full orchestra, chorus and principal soloists. The production is presented by the China National Opera House, under the patronage of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC), as part of the 2025 China–Saudi Arabia Cultural Year and in celebration of 35 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

For Riyadh’s audiences, the appeal is twofold. Opera newcomers will find an accessible entry point, as Carmen is fast-paced, richly melodic, and dramatically direct, while seasoned fans will appreciate a full-scale production presented in a venue designed for large symphonic sound.
