Summer in AlUla looks something like this

A whole host of flight and accommodation offers as well as inclusive packages awaits.

Between its majestic landscapes, legendary heritage sites, and outdoor adventure options, a jaunt to AlUla always feels like a no-brainer – especially for summer 2022. A complete suite of experiences for the summer holidays has been unveiled, making the ancient desert city an enticing destination for the upcoming Eid break and beyond.

Whether you’re looking to enjoy the stunning rarities, vast nature parks, or iconic landmarks that symbolise 200,000 years of history, the open-air museum offers full immersion or total relaxation. Cooler temperatures and the shade of the lush oasis, meanwhile, translate into the perfect getaway from the heat of the city – and both mornings and evenings are pleasantly cool.

Incidentally, Habitas AlUla Resort and Caravan by Habitas is offering special rates during the summer months (Valley Caravans from SAR 999 and Oasis Caravans from SAR 1,375). Elsewhere, Flydubai is operating two weekly flights direct from Dubai to AlUla, with flight and accommodation packages starting from AED 3,363. Here, we explore some of the experiences on offer at a glance.

AlUla Zipline

The thrilling AlUla Zipline at Harrat Mountain tops the list of summer AlUla activities, with a new extension that has just been added making it the longest and fastest in Saudi Arabia. Whether you are an adrenaline-seeker or just looking for your next adventure, it’s a must-do when visiting AlUla.

Via Ferrata

With Via Ferrata, adventurers can test their limits on an aerial challenge up a 200-metre cliff and suspended obstacles that make up the route of this highly challenging activity. A safety system allows participants to move on ladders and bridge elements while keeping them safe and entertained.

Helicopter Tour

An exhilarating helicopter flight with a captain and personal guide spans 30 minutes, allowing visitors to experience AlUla’s seven most famous landmarks – Elephant Rock and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hegra included.

Stargazing

Enjoy the warmth of a balmy summer evening out in the desert of otherworldly Gharameel. Here, you can sit back and relax as your guide offers insights and stories about the galaxies and constellations. The experience is inclusive of transport and a traditional Bedouin-style dinner.

Abseiling

The adrenaline rush of abseiling AlUla’s magnificent mountain landscapes is an unmissable activity that’s offered to experienced climbers and non-climbers alike. Participants who take part in this adventure are secured in a harness, while safety equipment and the assistance of an expert guide ensure their safety.

Vintage Land Rover Day Tour

A journey through the majestic landscape of AlUla, this once-in-a-lifetime experience allows visitors to cruise the ancient Nabataeans desert at Hegra in a renovated vintage Land Rover and observe the secret ceremonial chambers and remarkably well-preserved 110 tombs carved into the sandstone mountains.

UTV Buggy Tours

An unforgettable UTV buggy experience is nothing short of a wild ride, making for a great opportunity to see a new side of AlUla by racing across the golden desert and over the high sand dunes.

The Ridge Walk

A 4km trek offering a daily tour, The Ridge Walk is a relatively easy hiking experience for families craving a little adventure. The guided nature trip will immerse the participants in the desert environment, marked by awe-inspiring views of AlUla’s surreal landscape.

Heritage Oasis Trails

This popular 3km walking track takes visitors from the Orange Path to the Dadan Visitor Centre. Under the cooling shade of the palm trees lining the route that passes the ruins of summer farms, visitors can take it up a notch by stopping at the ‘swing park’ and breathing in the aroma of mint bushes and orange trees.

AlUla Bike Hub

Book a cycling tour through the canyons and mountains on special desert bikes or hire a bike at the new AlUla Bike Hub and explore the new 26km bike path along one of AlUla’s most scenic roads. AlUla Bike Hub also houses a café with drinks and refreshments to keep you adequately fuelled for your ride.

Heritage Sites

An absolute must for anyone visiting AlUla for the first, second or even third time? AlUla’s heritage sites. From the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hegra to Dadan and Jabal Ikmah, they provide a unique experience each and every time you visit owing to the deep and rich stories from each era. Bonus: fewer crowds during summertime means you get these sites to yourself.
