In honour of its milestone, Goldfield & Banks takes a look back at one of its most successful creations to bring about Pacific Rock Swell.
Australia has given us great coffee, Steve Irwin, and picturesque beaches to build our waterfront lifestyle dream around. But luxury perfume? Well, that’s what Goldfield & Banks have been working towards for the last decade. The brand is marking its 10th anniversary this year with its latest creation, Pacific Rock Swell. A fragrance inspired by Australia’s coastline but with a bit more depth.
French-Belgian perfumer Dimitri Weber established Goldfield & Banks after becoming intrigued by Australia’s native flora and wondering why it wasn’t more popular in the world of fine perfumes. He created Goldfield & Banks, which combines Australian ingredients with traditional French perfume techniques to create a uniquely Australian luxury perfume brand.

Since then, the brand has developed many fragrances informed by the country’s beaches and bushland, with Pacific Rock Moss being one of Goldfield & Banks’ most recognisable offerings. Fresh and reminiscent of the country’s southern shores, it helped establish the brand’s reputation for translating landscapes into layered scents. Following the success of the latter fragrance, Pacific Rock Swell revisits the original concept through a slightly more complex lens.
“Pacific Rock Swell was a long-awaited dream, the vision of a powerful fragrance that not only evokes the ocean but allows you to become one with it,” explains Weber. “I wanted to capture that moment of full immersion, where the energy, the salt, and the movement of the sea surround you entirely.”

Leonardo Lucheze is the nose behind this new fragrance. Together with Weber’s artistic direction, Pacific Rock Swell, an extrait de parfum with a 30 per cent fragrance concentration, was developed to turn the moment before a wave crashes, when the ocean gathers momentum, into something tangible to the senses in a bottle.
The fragrance opens with a bright introduction of bergamot oil, cardamom oil, and aromatic clary sage oil for its top notes. Things then become more interesting in the middle, where seaweed brings an earthy marine character, joined by clary sage absolute, geranium oil, mimosa absolute, fir balsam absolute, and labdanum absolute. Green, floral, and resinous nuances add complexity, steering it away from the familiar clean-laundry interpretation of aquatic perfumery. As the scent settles, Madagascar ylang-ylang oil introduces a floral softness, while patchouli oil and Australian sandalwood oil provide a creamy base. Ambergris rounds out Pacific Rock Swell with a warm, mineral quality that evokes the salinity of the ocean.

The ingredients reflect the global nature of fine perfumery, pairing Australian sandalwood with botanicals sourced internationally. Goldfield & Banks champions traceable essential oils and organic beetroot alcohol, keeping ingredient quality and provenance at the centre of its approach.
The house has grown an international following by giving Australian botanicals a starring role in luxury fragrance. Pacific Rock Swell continues that mission by taking the familiar romance of the coast and giving it a darker, more complex personality. Today, with a presence in over 90 countries, Goldfield & Banks proves that it is still capable of making waves rather than coasting along.
