Hidden gems are few and hard to come by in the age of unrelenting social media exposure. But the unconventional nature of a hole-in-the-wall café blends seamlessly into the idea of a mysterious culinary concept. This July, PEEKABREW! opened its doors — or rather “window” — in the youth haven Haji Lane, serving a concise selection of foam-topped drinks and fried sweet sandwiches.
The hole-in-the-wall café concept first bubbled to the surface as an ingenious response to running a food and beverage business in densely populated cities, where limited space and high pedestrian traffic fuel the possibility of large order volumes. Today, while the alleyways and kiosks of Tokyo, Hong Kong, and New York City hold the monopoly of these dining spots, the adoption of the concept makes perfect sense for land-scarce and saturated Singapore.
As Haziq Mikhail, the founder of PEEKABREW!, would likely agree. Located on a saccharine pink wall, the café adds another layer of playfulness by delivering customers’ orders with a monstrous claw. This disarming juxtaposition has attracted valuable publicity for PEEKABREW! online as a natural spot to capture entertaining social media content.
But a café relying solely on a clever dining concept is unlikely to last the test of time — its menu has to measure up to its cultural cachet too. PEEKABREW! does that by delivering two trendy and aesthetically pleasing food products in its debut lineup. The first is its Signature Cloud Series, featuring coffee or matcha with options for a topping of Buttercream Sea Salt, Strawberry, or Earl Grey cold foam. As for food, PEEKABREW! serves a collection of Japanese-inspired crispy sandos, generously stuffed with flavoured whipped cream and chocolate ganache.
