Journey to the Mediterranean with Petra, the newest addition to Dempsey Hill’s dining enclave.
With its emphasis on fresh produce, fragrant herbs and olive oil, the Mediterranean diet is widely regarded as one of the world’s healthiest. It is also the food Antonio Miscellaneo found himself craving during his most recent stint in London. Now, the chef-owner of Petra on Dempsey Hill has channelled that appetite into a restaurant dedicated to Levantine cooking, serving unfussy dishes that allow quality ingredients to shine.
Named after the ancient Jordanian city and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Petra is famous for its monumental architecture carved into rose-coloured cliffs. The city now serves as inspiration for this 8,000-square-foot restaurant opening on Saturday, 24 October 2026. With seating for 119 guests, the space promises an inviting warmth that feels a world away from the arid landscapes of its namesake.

The kitchen is a collaboration between Miscellaneo, whose culinary roots lie in Italian cooking, Executive Chef Anas Shami, formerly at the helm of Aniba Singapore, and Dawid Nowosadzki, who previously worked at Ottolenghi. Together, the trio have devised a Mediterranean menu that unfolds in three stages, beginning with mezze.
Housemade baba ganoush, hummus, and taramasalata arrive alongside freshly baked Middle Eastern flatbreads, including the Iranian staples barbari and sangak. These breads will also form the foundation of Petra’s rotating pizza menu. Drawing on his Italian background, Miscellaneo is giving the familiar crowd-pleaser a regional reinterpretation, so expect something that ventures outside the traditions of the Italian dish.

Next comes the fire, where wood-fired beef, chicken, and lamb are prepared for sharing. The standout is a whole grilled sea bass topped with crispy capers and parsley. Air-flown from the Mediterranean, the fish is treated with studied restraint, letting its natural flavour shine rather than drowning it beneath sauces and garnishes. Then there’s dessert. Among the offerings is muhallabia, a silky milk pudding perfumed with orange blossom or rose water.

Set amid the lush greenery of Dempsey Hill, Petra may be far from the sun-baked cliffs of Jordan, but its ambitions extend beyond borrowing a famous name. Through a menu shaped by three chefs with distinct culinary backgrounds, the restaurant reinterprets Mediterranean cooking, emphasising honest ingredients, open-fire techniques, and flavours that need little embellishment.
