The MICHELIN-recognised Japanese restaurant makes its Singapore debut at Ngee Ann City.

Singapore’s dining scene rarely stands still, especially in Orchard Road, where new openings continue to raise the bar for both concept and cuisine. The latest to arrive is Tonkatsu Daiki, a Japanese restaurant that combines immersive design with MICHELIN-recognised comfort food, bringing a slice of Osaka to the heart of the city.

Located inside Ngee Ann City, Tonkatsu Daiki does not reveal itself in the usual way. In fact, it is easy to walk past if you are not looking closely. The entrance has been designed to resemble a train carriage, immediately setting the tone for a restaurant that wants to offer more than just a meal. From the outset, diners are drawn into a “train ride to Osaka” experience, complete with a wall map inspired by Osaka’s Midosuji Line and a screen displaying moving street visuals that evoke the feeling of travelling through the Japanese city itself.

The concept is more than just a design flourish. Tonkatsu Daiki originates from Osaka and has earned a strong reputation in Japan as a specialist tonkatsu destination. The brand has also received consistent recognition from the MICHELIN Guide over several years, which adds weight to its arrival in Singapore. This opening is particularly notable as it marks Tonkatsu Daiki’s first venture outside Japan, making the Ngee Ann City outpost a significant milestone for the restaurant.

Once inside, the mood shifts. The theatrical entrance gives way to a more understated dining room, where the focus moves firmly onto the food. The interiors lean into a quieter, more traditional Japanese sensibility, allowing the restaurant’s signature dishes to take centre stage. It is a smart contrast, balancing visual storytelling with the kind of calm, pared-back setting that suits comfort dining.

At the heart of the menu is tonkatsu, the beloved Japanese dish centred on thick cuts of pork coated in delicate panko breadcrumbs and fried to perfection. When done well, the result is crisp on the outside and tender within, with the meat retaining its juiciness through careful temperature control. At Tonkatsu Daiki, the dish is served in the classic Japanese style, usually as part of a set meal with cabbage, rice and miso soup.

For diners seeking a blend of culinary credibility and a memorable setting, Tonkatsu Daiki offers both. It is a debut that brings Osaka character, MICHELIN pedigree and a touch of theatre to one of Singapore’s busiest shopping destinations.
