The experience combines Emirati culture and fitness.
If there’s one thing the UAE does well, it’s finding new and exciting ways to bring the community together. Within this landscape, Abu Dhabi is leading the charge – and this time, it’s introducing Misrah.
Misrah is a unique heritage trek that’s as much about physical endurance as it is about celebrating authentic Emirati values. Launched by Emirates Foundation in partnership with Active Abu Dhabi and the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, it’s an immersive national initiative designed to empower young people through a 1,000km trek across the UAE desert. But this isn’t just any trek, it’s done the traditional way, using camels and celebrating centuries-old customs along the route.
Misrah officially begins on 21 August, but the experience starts much earlier with an intensive training phase. It unfolds in two stages. Five hundred shortlisted applicants will head to Abu Dhabi for training in camel riding, traditional crafts, folk arts, and cultural practices. These sessions run until 19 October. Then the organisers will select only 100 participants to continue to the next stage — the epic 1,000km camel trek.

To ensure everyone gains the full cultural experience, participants will rotate between three stations: The Coffee House, Folk Arts Workshops, and Camel Pastures. During this phase, they will learn camel care, saddle assembly, traditional tool use, as well as folk arts such as Al Ayala, Al Harbiya, and Al Taghrooda. They’ll also experience San’a al-dhiyafa (the art of hospitality), campfire gatherings, Emirati coffee preparation, and storytelling traditions. These activities ensure that Misrah is not just about walking through the desert. It’s a deep dive into Emirati heritage, while also building resilience and national pride.
Registration is now open for UAE citizens and residents aged 18 to 25 – and you too can apply. Spots are limited, so you may want to submit your application before organisers saddle the camels and get ready to go. This is your chance to explore the UAE like its forefathers did, so get booking and training now.
