Andrew Lloyd Webber’s celebrated musical is heading to Yas Island.
The UAE’s theatre calendar is getting a touch of gothic drama. The Phantom of the Opera is coming to Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, giving audiences in the capital the chance to see Andrew Lloyd Webber’s celebrated musical live. With its masked protagonist, dramatic love story and unmistakable score, the production will make its Abu Dhabi debut from 10 to 28 March 2027.
The musical premiered at London’s Her Majesty’s Theatre, now His Majesty’s Theatre, on 9 October 1986, with Michael Crawford as the Phantom and Sarah Brightman as Christine Daaé. Its Broadway debut followed in January 1988. The New York production became Broadway’s longest-running show, completing 13,981 performances before closing in April 2023 after 35 years.
That legacy extends well beyond London and New York. The Phantom of the Opera has been seen by more than 160 million people in 229 cities worldwide and has won over 70 major theatre awards, including seven Tony Awards. The musical celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2026, a milestone that underlines its prominent place in musical theatre.
Based on Gaston Leroux’s novel, the story unfolds in and beneath the Paris Opera House. Christine Daaé, a young soprano, captures the attention of a mysterious musician who conceals his face behind a mask. He devotes himself to developing her talent, but his fascination becomes a dangerous obsession. Romance, jealousy and suspense follow as his influence reaches from the underground passages to the stage above.
Lloyd Webber’s music is central to the drama. The British composer, whose credits include Cats, Evita and Jesus Christ Superstar, wrote the score, with lyrics by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe. The songs have become familiar far beyond the theatre. “The Music of the Night” and “All I Ask of You” sit alongside “Think of Me”, “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again” and “Masquerade”.
