The Maldives has no shortage of tempting places to check in, but Aman’s arrival gives luxury travellers another reason to keep the archipelago on their radar. The hospitality brand has revealed that its first property in the Maldives will be called Amanolu, with an opening scheduled for 2028. Set within Vaavu Atoll, the development will combine a 52-key resort with 16 branded residences, each occupying an island of its own.
The name offers a clue to the mood. Aman is the Sanskrit word for peace, while Olu takes inspiration from the water lily, a flower associated with renewal, serenity and nature. For a brand whose story began with Amanpuri in Phuket in 1988, this next chapter continues its focus on intimate retreats and the warmth of a private home.
Longtime collaborator Kerry Hill Architects is behind the design. Taking its cues from the Maldives’ white beaches and turquoise lagoons, the architecture will favour simplicity, with indoor and outdoor spaces designed to keep the surrounding scenery in view. Dedicated islands for wellness and recreation will also form part of the destination.
For those considering a more permanent connection to the Maldives, the residential offering goes well beyond a beachfront address. Each of the 16 homes will have five bedrooms, private beaches, a 25-metre swimming pool and a personal berth. Dedicated staff accommodation will support service within each residence, while owners will have access to the wider resort’s facilities.
The setting will vary from one island home to another. Some residences will face a single shoreline, with either sunrise or sunset views. Others will stretch between two coasts, offering beaches on both sides and changing perspectives throughout the day. Choosing where to settle down with a morning coffee could become a daily ritual.
Wellness will have an island to itself, with an Aman Spa and the brand’s signature Spa Houses. A separate activity island will cater to recreation and exploration, while diving, snorkelling, watersports and marine experiences will give guests plenty of reasons to venture beyond their loungers.
Dining will include concepts from Aman’s global culinary portfolio, alongside family facilities and communal spaces for spending time together. The announcement does not name the restaurants, so those details remain under wraps for now.
Amanolu Maldives is scheduled to welcome its first guests in 2028, although a specific opening date has not been announced. For now, it is one to bookmark for a future Indian Ocean escape.
