A week of cinema, culture, and learning arrives in Sharjah this October.
Lights, camera, Sharjah! The emirate’s reputation as a cultural capital is well earned, and this October Sharjah turns the spotlight back on the big screen as the Sharjah International Film Festival celebrates its 12th edition. Running from 6 to 11 October at VOX Cinemas, City Centre Al Zahia, the festival brings a curated programme that blends discovery with education, inviting young audiences and film lovers of all ages to connect with stories from around the world.
This year’s line-up features 76 films from 26 countries, reflecting a broad spectrum of voices and styles. The programme welcomes first-time participation from São Tomé and Príncipe, Ecuador, and Belize, while South Korea is celebrated as the Guest of Honour. The international mix underlines the festival’s mission to champion unique perspectives and to nurture a new generation of cinema-literate audiences.
A jury of 16 directors, actors, and critics lends expertise to the selection and awards. The panel includes Syrian actress Yara Sabri, Emirati media figure Mohamed Rashid Al Salami, Kuwaiti director Dawood Sulaiman Al-Shuail, and South Korean filmmakers Jae Hoon Ahn and Ram Lee. With critics, animators, and festival directors also represented, each film is considered with both craft and context in mind.
On the Green Carpet, three Middle East premieres headline the week. “Miss Moxy,” a Dutch adventure about a lost cat’s journey home, promises charm for all ages. “Hajeer” by Saudi filmmaker Sarah Talab is set in 1960s Jeddah and follows a young musician navigating life with a hearing impairment. A South Korean title by Suryeon Jung explores the bond between two girls who cross borders and discover the meaning of human connection.
Beyond the screenings, the programme expands its educational reach. The new Global Children and Youth Film Congress will gather filmmakers, educators, and industry experts to examine the role of cinema in shaping young minds across the Arab world. Expect talks and panels on Arab cinema and the importance of amplifying youth perspectives, including stories of Palestinian children.
Creativity takes centre stage across the city. The Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park will host a SIFF Pop-Up with hands-on workshops in comic drawing, photography, and product design, giving children space to build their own narratives. VOX Cinemas will also run interactive activities to keep young minds engaged throughout the week.
With premieres, international spotlights, industry conversations, and practical workshops, the Sharjah International Film Festival offers a complete celebration of cinema and its power to inform, inspire, and entertain.
