Some journeys arrive precisely when expected. Others take the scenic route.

“Personalised service” is a promise made by countless hotels, but what does it mean in practice? Staff who remember your name, know your favourite drink or keep track of your departure plans? At the five-star InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort, those thoughtful touches were just the beginning. Here’s how the resort takes a familiar hospitality promise a step further.

My journey to InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort was originally scheduled for March to coincide with manta season. When the group press trip was cancelled, I assumed the opportunity had disappeared. Several months later, an invitation arrived to experience the resort after summer, and the long-awaited trip was suddenly back on.

Visiting during the wet season came with some apprehension; fortunately, the skies were firmly on our side.
Across four days, we enjoyed almost uninterrupted sunshine, with only a few fleeting showers. Against clear skies and crystalline water, Maamunagau looked every bit the Maldivian dream.

    An arrival to remember

    InterContinental Maldives

The journey from Malé began with a 30-minute seaplane flight – complete with the barefoot pilot – offering aerial views of scattered atolls suspended in impossible shades of blue. A brief boat transfer completed the final stretch to the island.

On the jetty, the resort team had assembled to welcome us with traditional Maldivian drumming, chilled drinks and warm smiles. We also took a photograph with one of the drummers, a charming memento of an arrival that felt ceremonial without becoming overly rehearsed.

Soon afterwards, we met Iyaaz, our curator for the stay. The role is comparable to that of a private butler, although the title feels particularly apt here: a curator does more than fulfil requests; he shapes the experience around the guest.

Iyaaz became our indispensable point of contact, his gracious presence exemplified the resort’s approach to service—highly attentive, yet refreshingly unintrusive.

    Lagoon living

    InterContinental Maldives

Pictures do not do InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort justice. The hotel is home to 81 beach, lagoon and overwater villas. Plus, a range of residences. The rooms range from an Overwater Pool Villa at 100 square metres to a Three Bedroom Beachfront Residence at 1,120 square metres.

We stayed in a two-storey Lagoon Pool Villa, positioned between the main island and the overwater villas with its own walkway. The room felt large, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows that opened onto the terrace. It’s tough to tell where the private pool ends and the sea starts. The beige and white decor is punctuated by pops of colour across the chairs, headboard, and room dividers. Plus, the traditional touches ranged from the rattan roof to patterned carpets and thoughtful amenities.

The layout is relaxed yet refined, optimising the stunning surroundings, while offering the best of both worlds: the privacy and panoramic views associated with overwater living, alongside the shallow turquoise waters of a beachfront retreat.

    Destination Dining

    InterContinental Maldives

InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort is home to a range of restaurants and bars which present a curious culinary journey around the island. At the heart of the hotel is the all-day dining restaurant, Café Umi. Located on the beautiful beachfront, the breakfast menu offers local, international and wellness favourites. Dishes range from the Maldivian Breakfast with tuna curry, salad, rice and chapatti, to the Middle Eastern Breakfast with egg, falafel, meat and olives. Plus, the live stations let you watch the chefs at work.

The Lighthouse serves Mediterranean cuisine in an atmospheric overwater setting. Its namesake tower is as impressive as the food and can be visited throughout the day for sweeping views across the island, tropical greenery and the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean.

Elsewhere, The Fish Market serves spectacular seafood, and The Collective serves Italian pizzas and pastas. The Pool Bar is family-friendly, while The Retreat is adults-only and provides a peaceful alternative for couples and guests seeking a quieter atmosphere. The latter, with its serene lagoon setting, was our go-to, and at times we couldn’t see anyone else.

In the company of manta rays

InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort makes the most of its luxurious location. Located near Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, excursions include a dolphin as well as a sunset cruise and swimming with manta rays.

The resort works alongside the Manta Trust, whose research and conservation efforts help protect these remarkable creatures. Before entering the water, the team introduced us to manta behaviour, responsible interaction and the importance of preserving their marine habitat.

The feeding site lies 45 minutes from the resort by boat. Its plankton-rich waters attract mantas, and we were fortunate to encounter several during our excursion. Yet, despite their imposing size, mantas are gentle and often cautious. Most maintained their distance, but the occasional curious individual swept remarkably close. Watching one glide past, with the effortless movement of a bird in flight, was an extraordinary experience.

The excursion was expertly managed, allowing us to appreciate the animals without disrupting their natural behaviour. It was exhilarating, educational and a compelling reminder of how much life exists beneath the surface of the Maldives.

    Island Wellness

    InterContinental Maldives

Closer to shore, Maamunagau’s house reef offers another accessible window into the underwater world, while fitness fans will get a kick out of the sports centre and sunrise yoga. Planet Trekkers keeps children entertained on sunny and rainy days.

For deeper relaxation, the AVI Spa occupies a serene position above the water. Treatments are tailored to individual preferences, including the desired pressure level. I opted for a deep-tissue massage, delivered to the gentle rhythm of the waves below. With skilled therapists, a personalised approach and tranquil overwater treatment rooms, the spa provides an effortless transition from activity to complete stillness.
