Join Sharjah Film Platform’s celebration of indie movies

Catch film screenings, talks and masterclasses from industry experts.

Lights, camera, Sharjah. Sharjah Film Platform runs from 21 to 30 October, and celebrates independent cinema with regional and international films. Movie buffs, grab the popcorn – here’s what to expect from the annual film festival.

Sharjah Film Platform takes place across three venues: Mirage Cinema, Sharjah Institute of Theatrical Arts and Gallery 4 of Al Mureijah Arts Space. The festival includes film screenings, masterclasses and talks by filmmakers as well as industry professionals.

Now in its fifth year, the event will screen more than 30 films, and celebrate the late film director Moufida Tlatli. During the festival, visitors can catch three of the pioneering Tunisian filmmaker’s work: The Silences of the Palaces, The Season of Men and Nadia et Sarra

In collaboration with the US Mission to the UAE, the festival includes speakers from the United States. The event welcomes American Lebanese film director Darine Hotait, and African American video artist Ulysses Jenkins. Plus, the masterclasses cover indie film distribution, breaking into the film and TV industry, and documentary production.

Film screenings throughout the festival include 20 Pounds a MonthAlmoAmreeka, Bubbles of Happiness, Copacabana Papers, Don’t Get Too Comfortable and Foragers. Plus, Memoria starring Tilda Swinton and Juan Pablo Urrego is being screened. The film follows a Scottish woman who experiences mysterious sensory syndrome while travelling through the Columbian jungles.

Tickets are available now and start from AED 20 for an individual student ticket, and AED 30 for an individual adult ticket. A 10-day festival pass is AED 80 for a student, and AED 120 for an adult.

So whether you want to network, learn or just enjoy a good flick or three, Sharjah Film Platform is bringing it with 10 days of movies.

A sucker for a good story, if you invite Kohinoor to a gallery, comedy night, new restaurant, hiking trip, cycle ride, pool day or just about any activity, she’ll probably say yes – that is if she isn’t busy planning her next adventure.
