R&B singer The Weeknd partners with Blue Bottle Coffee on Samra Origins
The Ethiopian coffee celebrates his heritage and family.
R&B hitmaker The Weeknd has a new side hustle, as he is going from concerts to coffee. He has collaborated with Blue Bottle Coffee to launch his own product, Samra Origins. The line pays tribute to his Ethiopian roots, and is named after his mother.
The Weeknd’s Samra Origins is available from 9 May at select Blue Bottle cafés in the United States. Plus, there is the limited release of the single blend, Exceedingly Rare Ethiopia Wolde Faye Koricha COE #7. The coffee harks back to the traditions that were originated and perfected by Ethiopian coffee farmers.
The Weeknd explained: “Ethiopian culture is an important part of my identity and I’m proud to work alongside the Blue Bottle Coffee team to shine a light on Ethiopian traditions, values, and, of course, coffee. Growing up, I watched my mother perform Buna Tetu, a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. This sensory experience helped shape my understanding of community and taught me to always honour my roots.”

Since Blue Bottle Coffee’s inception in 2002, we’ve sourced coffee from Ethiopia. In 2023, Ethiopia is still consistently among our top origins by volume. I’m excited that we’re extending our commitment there with Samra Origins so we can continue to share the best of Ethiopian coffee and support our network of producers in the country.”
The Weeknd, real name Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, hails from Toronto, Canada. He went from anonymously releasing singles on YouTube to becoming a megastar. His hit singles include Can’t Feel My Face, I Feel It Coming, Starboy and The Hills. He has released five studio albums, which range from Kiss Land to After Hours. Over his career, he has won four Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards and 20 Billboard Music Awards. Plus, he has been nominated for an Academy Award.
