Here’s where to celebrate Chinese New Year in the UAE

The Year of the Tiger is all about making big changes and here are the best places to welcome in the Chinese Lunar Year across Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Buddha-Bar Dubai

The Grosvenor House hotspot will host a special edition of its weekly “Buddha-Bar Nights” to celebrate Chinese New Year. A Chinese dragon dance will greet diners and the venue will be decorated with delicate orchids and traditional Chinese decorations to transport you to the Far East. Enjoy a menu of duck salad, truffle mushroom chicken bao, char sui Wagyu short rib, mushroom rice clay pot, sweet and sour sea bream, and grilled five-spice cornfed chicken. Wednesday 2 to Saturday 5 February, from 7pm until late.

Ewaan

Dressed up with themed decor and featuring live entertainment, Ewaan at Palace Downtown will serve a special menu adorned with dishes that pay homage to Chinese spices and flavours. Celebrants can enjoy a range of buffet stations featuring Peking duck rolls, dumplings, baos and a carvery offering Hoisin roasted turkey and teriyaki salmon fillet. Main courses will include steamed ginger soy sea bream and braised beef short ribs. Dessert wraps up the evening with a Year of the Tiger (pear compote and ginger crémeux walnut sponge), Money Bag (red velvet fruit cake) and Gong Xi Fa Cai (strawberry and milk chocolate cream choux). For those looking to celebrate in true Versace fashion, Giardino will host a themed buffet to mark the arrival of the Year of the Tiger. Enjoy a tasteful dinner with an atmosphere to match. Monday 31 January and Tuesday 1 February, from 6:30pm onwards AED 250 per person (food only).

Hakkasan Dubai

Hakkasan will welcome guests with a signature set menu for the Chinese New Year celebrations. The set menu starts with a ‘Yu Sheng’ smoked salmon salad and a Xingfu dim sum trio. Main dishes include baked cornfed spatchcock with morel mushroom, wok-fried seabass, Wagyu rib eye and XO sauce lobster egg fried rice. A gold tiger-striped orange dark chocolate firecracker and mandarin sorbet will mark the end of the luxurious feast. Hakkasan’s wishing tree returns this year and guests are invited to write their wishes on a red ribbon before tying it to the restaurant’s wall latticing in hopes that they will come true. Available from Monday 31 January to Tuesday 15 February, from 6pm to 11pm. AED 498 per person.

Hutong will enchant guests with an unforgettable experience and traditional entertainment to welcome the Year of the Tiger. Available exclusively on the evening of 1 February, guests will witness an outstanding lion and dragon dance paying tribute to Chinese culture and traditions. Fans of Hutong are also in for a special treat as each venue across the globe will present an exclusive cocktail for the month of February. The Dubai outpost will serve a special handcrafted cocktail composed of Mandarin puree, fresh peppercorns, dry chill and pepper honey. The cheery cocktail is topped with an edible and artistic Hutong region tiger rice paper. Hutong will also introduce a Chinese New Year Dim Sum Platter and flavourful Northern Chinese dishes such as Lobster Lo Hei and Wagyu Rolls with Sichuan Chili Sauce to mark the occasion. Maiden Shanghai

Start the year of the tiger the Maiden Shanghai way with an exciting Chinese New Year celebration. Indulge in a four-course set menu from Chef Luo Bing to celebrate the occasion in style, featuring organic gourmet Chinese dishes inspired from four renowned Chinese cuisines – Cantonese, Sichuan, Shanghai and Beijing. Monday 31 January and Tuesday 1 February, from 7pm to midnight. AED 350 per person.

Just footsteps away from the Arabian Gulf, the characteristics of Sea Fu at Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach depict the elegance and prestige of the upcoming year of the tiger. A special a la carte menu consisting of dumplings, xiao long bao, Alaskan King Crab and chicken with winter black truffle will be served to celebrate Chinese New Year and bring forth luck and good fortune. Available from Monday 31 January to Saturday 5 February, from 1:30pm to 3:30pm and 6pm to 2am.

As the Year of The Tiger roars in, Shanghai Me celebrates the beginning of the new Chinese Lunar Year with decadent cuisine and a grateful spirit. The art-deco Asian inspired restaurant will honour the auspicious occasion with an evening of celebration, encouraging joyous new beginnings, bountiful fortune, and prosperity to all for the year ahead. Diners can expect to be dazzled by a live percussionist while enjoying the stunning restaurant or the lush Shanghai Me Garden – inspired by the Yuyuan Gardens in China – inviting prosperity, optimism, and happiness for the new year. Tuesday 1 February, from 7pm to 2am.

Overlooking Ain Dubai, contemporary Chinese restaurant SHI will debut a limited-edition à la carte menu to commemorate Lunar New Year. The menu will feature black Angus beef char siu bao, duck salad with peanut sauce, coral seabass with chef’s hometown sauce and wok tossed lobster with Guilin sauce. SHI’s expansive terrace offers views of the JBR skyline and sparkling Marina. Available from Saturday 29 January to Saturday 5 February for lunch and dinner.

Grand Millennium Hotel Dubai’s Pan Asian restaurant will be unleashing the tiger to celebrate Chinese New Year. The waterside restaurant invites guests to celebrate the Year of the Tiger and indulge in a curated selection of festive dishes. Guests will be immersed in the celebratory atmosphere with brightly coloured lanterns and an authentic set menu, bringing prosperity for the year ahead. The menu offers diners a feast of flavours with Dynasty Prawns, Steamed Sea Bass with Spicy Black Bean Sauce, Szechuan Spice Australian Beef Tenderloin and Lotus Leaf Rice with Taro and Chicken Sausage. In addition, diners can indulge in Sago Pearls with Fresh Mango for the sweetest end to the celebrations. Available daily until 28 February, from 7:30pm to 10:30pm.
