Sotheby’s Dubai exhibits iconic Michael Jordan trainers

The Dynasty Collection includes signed pairs of sneakers.

Sneaker fever has been running high in Dubai, thanks to adidas X Ravi Restaurant and Nike x Tiffany & Co. Now, the GOAT has slam dunked them all, as rare Michael Jordan trainers are on display for the first time in the Middle East. So, if you want to see (or buy) MJ’s shoes, here’s what you need to know.

Located in DIFC, Sotheby’s Dubai is exhibiting the Dynasty Collection until Friday, 3 March. The line includes six individual Air Jordan sneakers, which he wore during six NBA championships.

The trainers are part of the first-ever collaboration between Michael and Nike: Air Jordan I. Created in 1984 and designed by Tinker Hatfield, he wore them during his first season with the Chicago Bulls.

The set in Sotheby’s Dubai consists of an Air Jordan VI (1991), Air Jordan VII (1992), Air Jordan VIII (1993), Air Jordan XI (1996), Air Jordan XII (1997), and Air Jordan XIV (1998). It’s not often that the auction house exhibits streetwear in the Middle East, so it’s a unique opportunity to see such an exhibition. Plus, three of the trainers are signed by Michael himself.

Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s head of streetwear and modern collectables, explained: “Worn in each of the six unforgettable games that secured the Bulls’ dynasty status, this collection’s overwhelming influence on pop culture and basketball is undeniable as these shoes simultaneously combine Jordan’s legacy, domination, and stardom.”

Over Michael’s career, he has won six NBA championships, six Finals MVPs, five league MVPs, and two Olympic Gold Medals. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest athletes that ever lived. Plus, the upcoming dramatic biopic Air, looks back at this exact partnership between Nike salesman Sonny Vaccaro and Michael. The film stars Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Viola Davis.

If you’ve got duffle bags of dirham to spare, the sneakers will be privately sold by Sotheby’s Dubai and are expected to fetch millions.
