Megaproject alert: Dubai’s The Loop creates a 93km cycling and walking highway

The climate-controlled green corridor will make Dubai a 20-minute city.

Let’s be honest: we all get frustrated by the UAE summer, which stops us from cycling, running and even walking outside. The Loop, which is Dubai’s latest megaproject, has the answer: a 93-kilometre, climate-controlled highway. The plan aims to create a smart platform, so that cycling and walking become a primary mode of transport.

Say bye to traffic, and hello to a stress-free commute. The Loop aims to make Dubai a 20-minute city by 2040. Upon completion, it will connect 3 million residents to key services. This means that your daily needs, such as visiting a transit station, are a mere 20 minutes away by foot or bike. Other cities in the world aiming to become 20-minute cities include Edinburgh, Paris and Melbourne.

Dubai's The Loop

Dubai’s The Loop will also be home to hotels, parks, playgrounds, sports facilities and vertical farms. Visitors can check into wellness hotels, which will range from budget to luxury properties. Plus, the neighbourhoods will include allotments and parks, which bring communities together.

Dubai’s The Loop has ambitious green aims: zero-emissions transport system, recycled water for irrigation and renewable energy using kinetic power. So, the track will use the energy from every footstep, which is fed to the generators as useable electricity.

Baharash Bagherian, CEO of URB, explained: “Dubai is the best place for entrepreneurship in urban mobility. The Loop project is an embodiment of that entrepreneurial spirit, which aims to make Dubai the most connected city on earth by foot or bike. The project is the future of urban mobility infrastructures which are more than sustainable transport systems.

“These types of infrastructures are spaces and utilities for people, where various leisure and community services can also be provided. These types of infrastructures are an enjoyable mode of sustainable transport, no matter the weather conditions.”
